Travertine is a type of limestone rock, but unlike limestone, it is created in mineral springs and geysers. The coloring of the travertine is caused by impurities that are deposited in the bedrock, such as iron, together with the sediments in mineral-rich bodies of water. Travertine is characterized by holes, also known as pores, created from carbon dioxide evasion, and it is hard stone that has been used in construction.

Travertine can and is used for many applications, such as indoor flooring, indoor and outdoor wall tiles, outdoor flooring, pool edgings and tiles, patio decks, backsplashes, bathroom tiles, counters, floors, sinks, columns, pool tiles, and more. There are two ways that travertine can be cut in, for a different aesthetic: vein cut (cutting along the vein, for a wood-like grain look), and cross cut (a.k.a. fleuri cut, cutting perpendicular to the vein for a more even color with circular swirl patterns).
